Take a look in any classroom filled with law students, and chances are that you will find students who can barely add, subtract or do multiplication problems. Many students end up going into areas that focus on law, english, literature and other “language” fields in order to avoid math entirely. The reason these students are so vigilant about avoiding math is because they likely were not successful math students in their past.
The current state of education in the U.S. has affected the math skills of thousands of students. Thousands of students have been able to get through high school without mastering subjects like algebra or geometry. It is essential that the U.S. improve its math standards if our graduate students are able to effectively compete in this century.
Improve Standards for College
One way that graduate students can develop the analytical abilities that they need to thrive is by taking math classes in college. Every college should require U.S. students to take math classes that focus on common core standards in math. A student should be able to do easy tasks like addition, subtraction and multiplication within his or her own mind. Too many students are ultimately pursuing competitive graduate degrees and are unable to have the analytical abilities that they need in order to thrive in these fields.
Improve Standards in High School
Standards can also be improved in high schools around the country. The U.S. is already working on improving the math standards in high schools around the country. Students will now need to pass certain standardized examinations before they can receive their high school diplomas. They may also need to pass certain exams before they can move on to the next class or grade in a school.
More Accountability for Math Teachers
In the future, math teachers can be held more accountable in order to improve math standards. In colleges, a student should be assigned a tutor if he or she is not mastering the math subject. The same should go for high school. A student should have access to a high school tutor who can help him or her excel in the field of math.
Not every school does offer these extra resources though. More funding should be given to schools so that they can afford to hire tutors and other professionals to help students learn the math skills that they need in order to compete in the work force.
