Higher-education establishments are forced to raise tuition prices lately, and it isn’t any surprise for anyone. When tuition prices go up, students naturally suffer because of these spikes in prices. Students going to traditional 4 year universities around the world are graduating with incredible debt, if they can even find enough loans to make it through school.
Support Deterioration
Scholarships and public funding is dropping all over the world, including 7.6% in the US. Colleges and universities are forced to pass this on to students attending the school. This results in price hikes. This is usually the only way that colleges can afford to maintain the same quality education that students and their parents are accustomed to. In 2012 the budget is increasing slowly. Even with increases, it is not fast enough to meet the demands of new students.
Student Debt Explosion
The number of students in debt is increasing dramatically. This is caused by the 375 percent increase in tuition since the ‘80s. Student debt can hurt the future of jobs. It hurts families. It hurts individuals. Financial aid is one of the only ways that students can safely avoid being permanently in debt to their alma mater.
Students are no doubt struggling to balance work and education. While attending college can improve the futures of these students, government organizations aren’t making it any easier for them. Higher tuition means a harder struggle for these students. This is one of the most pressing problems of this decade and the years to come.
There Is A Solution
More and more Students are switching to online education. This is often cheaper, easier to access and widely available. Students that can’t afford an Ivy League education can now take cheap online courses with a similar quality and standard of education. Ivy league universities are now offering courses online, on coursera.org. Professors are catching on too. They are more willing to teach online courses if the students are willing to learn through distance schooling.
When students are able to afford their education, more are likely to pursue an advanced education. This improves the job market, the economy and the world as a whole. Education for all shouldn’t be a dream, but it should be a reality.
Even though tuition rates are growing yearly, students can seek out methods to make their education more affordable. Financial aid, grants and low-interest loans are all helpful in paying for college. The situation is not hopeless, and many universities are striving for lower cost education for their students.
